Home-Office and the crisis.

Due to the oil crisis of the 70’s in the US, the physicist Jack Nilles, devised ways to optimize resources, one of them was to bring work to the worker and not the other way around, and so the concept of “Telecommuting” was born. On the other hand,

Peter Goidmark proposed to work in the city without having to leave the field and be able to create the “rural society”, telecommunications would enable the worker to avoid going to his workplace to carry out his daily activities. However, the technological development of the moment didn’t allow this new form of work to become a widespread reality.

Currently, traffic problems, environmental awareness and, of course, the need for companies to become flexible and dynamic, have made Home-Office a tool to attract employees and make them more competitive in the job market. There are more and more companies that have adopted this modality for the comfort and well-being of their collaborators, and also for the savings obtained by not having to deal with the costs of maintaining a physical space and conditioning it for work.

The year 2020 has come with a crisis that has changed not only the way of working but also the way we live, the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19), has made us rethink our lifestyle, our values ​​and of course our work. Not being able to leave home, not being able to be with our loved ones and in most cases not even being able to go to work is making us rethink the importance of developing a telework policy in our companies.

Spain entered a state of alarm on March 14th and it has been a month in which the figures in terms of employment and social security have been overwhelming. The Minister of Employment, Yolanda Díaz, announced on Thursday, April 2nd, that during the previous month almost 834,000 jobs disappeared, she also announced that the Public Employment Service (“SEPE” in spanish) granted 250,000 companies unemployment benefits for workers subject to ERTEs (temporary employment regulations) due to coronavirus. In turn, the Minister of Social Security reported that the drop in enrollment in the social security for the month of March was 833,979, comparing it with the financial crisis of 2008 where there was the same decline but between the months of February to October.

So, if Home-Office is a concept that we have been considering since 1970, and telecommunications, the internet and the software to facilitate and automate processes are so present in our day to day:

  • Why is our society so unprepared to face a situation like this?
  • Why, if our companies seek to innovate in managing their collaborators every day, they don’t have the adequate tools to offer them the opportunity to work from home in the face of extraordinary situations such as the one we are now experiencing due to the coronavirus?
  • Could it be that only one sector or large companies can afford telework tools for their collaborators?

Well, from Trabali we declare a resounding no. Home-office and time management has never been so easy and inexpensive, especially for micro and small businesses.
